The Benfits of Doing Things Out of Your Comfort Zone

The other day I had this amazing idea, what if I created a series where I tell you about my life? What would people think of that? It could be weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly, depending on what you'd like. But would you like to hear about me?
The other day, me and Carmen, a crazy friend of mine, decided we were going to go busking. So in case you didn't know, I don't sing very well, yet the plan was to go sing and play the guitar. Properly not the best idea.

"It'll be fun," is Carmen's way of making me agree to anything and for some reason it always works on me.

So there we were, heading into town on a hot summers day with our guitars and music. I must admit I was shaking in my sandals. I've never busked before or even sung and played in public, so I didn't know what to expect.

I was lucky though, because if there is one thing Carmen beats me in, it's preforming (she beats me in a lot of other places as well though).

Carmen's mum, waved us off as she left us to our music making. She, properly fearing that noise we'd create, had decided to go do a bit of shopping while waiting for us.

Together, we set ourselves up and opened our music. Terrified out of my wits I opened my mouth to sing and let me tell you, it wasn't half as scary as I thought it would be and it's taught me something.

I've learnt that always challenge yourself, even though it scares you, do it. Don't let your fears get the better of you. Because if you do, you'll miss out on so many great things!

To be honest, I'm glad I went busking with Cameron. I had a great time. Most likely I didn't sound any good, but I was with my friend, we were laughing and doing what we enjoy. That was all that matters. And I'll tell you another thing, I'm going to do it again. I've found out I enjoy busking and singing for people.

So that's the moral of this story. Just enjoy yourself and have fun!

What have you done that's scared you recently? Do you like doing things that aren't in your comfort zone?

  1. Performing and talking in front of people are two things that I have conquered. I still need to conquer talking in front of people about myself and stories about myself (that's my final for language arts, actually, which is happening on Thursday)! It's helped me become much more outgoing, friendly and sociable as a person. You rock that guitar! I want to learn how to play one, but currently I'm learning to play the ukulele and it's hard remembering the finger positions for each chord.

    xoxo Morning

    1. Being shy doesn't make things much easier! It's not in my nature to be the centre of attention. Maybe being homeschooled hasn't helped that. So it was hard to just come out and show the world what I could do!
Thank you! I really enjoy playing it, though it doesn't sound that good:P The finger positions though. Oh boy are they hard!

  2. Hearing about other blogger's daily lives is definitely fun! I'm in IB Prep Year this school year, so it's definitely my 'honeymoon year' and I'll be trying out lots of new things. Blogging is one of them, and I'm also writing insane amounts every day. You definitely hit the nail on the point: we shouldn't let our fears control us.

    1. It is, but like you, I'm nervous about doing public things. I'm really shy and it took a lot for me to even open my mouth!

  4. I haaaated busking. XD I'm too shy! But I busked for like a year straight to earn money for my music lessons, it just so wasn't me...whereas my sister adores it and busks all the time. heh. It is an interesting experience though. Definitely nerve-wracking. OH. But I like little posts and stories about your life. It's awesome. ;-)

    1. Hahaha! We were trying to earn money so that Cameron could afford to buy herself a computer.
Nerve-wracking isn't the word, more like downright terrifying:)

    1. It is fun, when you get over the fright of it! We did, but it all went to my friend who needs it!

  6. You're making me jealous! I really want to go busking with my friend (we are in a band) but where I live it's the middle of winter and our instruments would go out of tune immediately.

Sounds like you bad a good time, though. Performing is scary!

    1. You could always sing without instruments, if that's your thing. Your voice won't go out of tune:P

  7. I love this post!! I love performing, and I really want to go busking! My sister and I are planning on doing it this spring! She plays fiddle and I play guitar and sing! I'm somewhat of a natural performer, I perform in theatre and chorus, but my sister just says I am a natural show off! :P It's sometimes hard to go out of your comfort zone, but once you do it's so worth it! It reminds me of my first ever audition! I auditioned for the lion the witch and the wardrobe. I got a leading role! I almost didn't audition that day because I was so nervous, but I made myself do it, and that opened up a world of opportunity for me. My friend use to be a missionary in china, and he raised over 100 dollars from playing guitar on the side of the street! I love these posts! You should definitely do more! Maybe once a week!

  10. AHHH! That sounds sooo awesome. Did you make a lot of money? I've never done anything like that, to be honest, I'd probably freak out before I even got there :) But I've done things out of my comfort zone, and when I did them, I felt so much more confident. Public speaking is where I need to work on :) Great post idea!

    1. We did make quite a bit, I wasn't there when my friend counted it up though.
You feel much more proud of the things you do which scare you, don't you?

  11. This inspired me and made me realize there is a benefit to doing things you're terrified to do. :)

    Thank you for this. <3

  12. Hey! Visiting from the GTW's link-up.
What have I done recently that' scares me and is out of my comfort zone? Well, the book I'm currently writing is about a girl with Lyme disease and I had Lyme disease for 6 years, so it's rather difficult for me to work on and quite out of my comfort zone at times. :) And yes, in the end I'm glad I'm doing it. Thank you for sharing your story!
